In Greene County district court Nathan James Flinn, 23, of Rippey was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty Aug. 26 to a charge of operating while intoxicated (OWI)- first offense. He must pay a $1,250 civil penalty and $229.97 court costs. Restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees is to be determined. He was placed on informal probation for one year. He must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation he has already undergone, and he must complete a drinking drivers course at a community college. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was dismissed. A companion case in magistrate court in which Flinn was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed. Patrick Michael Kennedy, 31, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to domestic abuse assault- aggravated, amended from domestic abuse assault- third or subsequent offense. All but seven days of the prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. Kennedy must pay sheriff’s fees for the time he serves and he must complete a batterers education program at his own expense. Kennedy was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge. He must pay $736.78 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs. (Sentencing: Kester)
Ryan James Brown, 44, of Jefferson was fined $315 after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of criminal mischief- fourth degree, amended from criminal mischief- second degree. He must also pay a $110.25 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative (LEI) surcharge $1,200 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees, and $121 court costs. (Sentencing: Kester)
Jonathan Mitchell Cole, 20, of Des Moines was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of OWI- first offense. He was placed on informal probation for one year. Cole must pay a $1250 civil penalty and $600 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees. He must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation he has already undergone, as well as a drinking drivers course at a community college. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: Kester)
Christopher Herbert Lawrence, 36 of Ames was sentenced to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine- second offense. All but two days of the prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. The probation is concurrent to probation imposed in another Greene County case. Lawrence must reside in a residential correctional facility until the maximum benefits are attained. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Lawrence was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge, a $10 drug abuse resistance education (DARE) surcharge and a $125 LEI surcharge. Lawrence’s driver’s license was revoked for 180 days. A charge of possession of a dangerous weapon was dismissed. A case in magistrate court is which Lawrence was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia was also dismissed, with $60 court costs assessed against Lawrence. (Sentencing: Lawrence)
Daniel Blain Pierce, 44, of Colfax was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of theft- first degree. He was fined $1,000 with a $350 surcharge; both were suspended. The court determined he is unable to pay $1,200 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees. He must pay a $125 LEI and $881.15 court costs. A charge of possession of stolen property was dismissed. (Sentencing: Honorable Gary L. McMinimee)

Barbara Ann Sherman, 62, of Jamaica was sentenced to 90 days in jail after she pleaded guilty to a charge of OWI- first offense, amended from OWI- third offense. All but two days of the jail time was suspended. She must pay a sheriff’s fee for the time she serves. She was placed on informal probation for one year. She must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse she has already undergone, and she must complete a drinking drivers course at a community college. Sherman was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge and a $10 DARE surcharge. She must also pay $650 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs. John Douglas Reed, 33, of Jefferson was sentenced to 365 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal mischief- fourth degree, amended from criminal mischief- third degree. The jail time was suspended and he was placed on informal probation for one year. Reed was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge and a $125 LEI surcharge. Kimberly Marie Smith, 43, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of burglary- third degree (motor vehicle). The prison term was suspended and she was placed on probation for two years. He was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge and a $125 LEI surcharge. She must pay restitution to be determined for her court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $100. Two counts of attempted burglary- third degree (motor vehicle) were dismissed. Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignments as follows: Shane Detleff Coil, 36, of Jefferson, criminal mischief- fourth degree; Christopher Herbert Lawrence, 36, of Jefferson burglary- third degree (motor vehicle) and attempted burglary (motor vehicle), two counts; Joshua Harold Gingery, 32, of Churdan, burglary- second degree; Rachel Lavonne Baker, 33, of Des Moines, possession of methamphetamine- first offense and possession of marijuana- first offense; and Troy Angelo McGee, 47, of Fort Dodge, eluding while participating in a felony possession of marijuana- third or subsequent, and possession of methamphetamine. Trial dates were set for Nov. 1 for every defendant except McGee. McGee’s trial date is Sept. 27.
